Like a few others, we didn't follow all the food and trash rules. We didn't pay much attention, as we had all camped in the Park and had even done back country hiking for decades. In our minds we knew what we were doing. Well, we didn't and were pretty embarrassed to come back to camp to find our coolers and trash gone. Food inside coolers isn't even small critter proof. The National Park Rangers and Park Police hauled our stuff away - we had a lot of stuff, so much that it could have impacted others.
We are looking forward to our next trip.
This place was just awesome! Nice campsite with picnic tables and a fire ring. There are hiking trails nearby and as expected T-mobile has no reception here. The rangers are very friendly and during my last visit I enjoyed the fall foliage up close and personal.
I will never be staying at a Shenandoah National Park campground again; which is ashame because it is a gorgeous park. My boyfriend and I spend a night at this campground and we were treated like 5 year olds that have never stepped foot into the wilderness. After arriving to our site, we quickly set up camp so that we could hurry to the camp store (where we then spent $60 on Smores and firewood). We were gone for 10 minutes and both of our neighboring sites were occupied with people less than 20ft away. After returning to the site, our neighbor notified us that our coolers had been confiscated by a park ranger. We then had to go to the station to get our belongings back, but it wasn't that simple. The ranger had to run an ID, you know because we are such felons and all. She then gave my boyfriend an $80 FINE! He is a school teacher who has never had a charge or violation in his life. We were treated like children. It was absolutely uncalled for. I donate to the NP service every year and have traveled all over the US to enjoy the parks and this is how we get treated? I'm also from PA; which has a large bear population and this would NEVER be an issue. I hope the park rangers at this campground are happy that they are driving away visitors.
We had a wonderful weekend at a well-run beautiful park. The picture below is from the trail to the falls - which was dry, but the hike, while hard, was worth the journey.
The station was about three minutes away. We were fined and left shaking our heads about how poorly we had done. We knew better. The park people handled everything professionally and were looking out for everyone.
Highly recommended campsite. Clean and well managed. It can get very crowded though. Great hiking nearby.
Great location and clean facilities. Quiet and camp/RV sites are spacious. There are a handful of yurts that look pretty awesome to stay in. Hiking trails, waterfalls, and lots of wildlife to enjoy. Incredible views from some of the nearby trails.
